With so many new faces in camp this year, ideally you'd like to have all of them around as much as possible to establish chemistry and continuity in your lineup. But it's a great experience for Vernon, who's getting the most playing time of anyone.

    You're never satisfied of course. But I look at the big picture, some of the things that have happened, things that might have happened, have a chance to happen and I feel good.

    I think the baseball world is not giving them as much credit as they deserve. They're a good ball club, they proved that last year, just too many outside influences affected them.

    If the Yanks don't win the division, they'll win the wild card. New York knows how to win when it has to, plus Joe Torre holds things together.


    The longer you're around, guys see you enough, you figure some guys out. They've got good arms, they've got the stuff to get guys out regardless. It's all about locating and pitching ahead.

    Since he's come back, I've liked everything we've gotten out of him, ... Sometimes, he hasn't gotten any run support -- he's lost some tight ballgames. His won-loss record, I think, is misleading.

    When you're playing certain teams in the league, you know you've got to score. We scored five last night and then five in one inning tonight. You know you have to do that, and the pitching did a nice job. But, yeah, the add-on runs are key.

    That's what we're shooting for. He threw a side session Sunday and played some catch today. I think Wednesday, they want a simulated game.

    It was a little bit of a sloppy game tonight. We'll bounce back tomorrow. Errors are part of the game.

    We looked like a team tonight. It's the first time we have had our whole lineup out there and, yeah, the pitching was solid.

    We survived it, we move on. There's more tough ones ahead of us.

    He had great stuff. He went out there a few times and pitched very good for us. He may have had a tender elbow at times. To be honest with you, it doesn't surprise me. We knew he could pitch.

    But there's not a lot of time left (in the season), so I don't know yet what it means.

    The thing about Crawford is he's got some big-time power, too. He can beat you in so many ways. They're pretty much the same guy once they get on, you know they're going to get their bases, it's tough to get them even when everything goes right.

    Just chalk it up to part of maturation. He's going to have those bad outings, ... He's ahead of schedule just by being here. We're trying to balance it, too.

    He (Rios) wasn't benched (yesterday), he wasn't going to play (yesterday), ... Reed (Johnson) got three hits the night before and that's why he's in right.
