    We thought with Marcus against a team like Miami, you get a guy who can really run it and it helps you some at that quarterback position. I think Marcus showed you that a couple of times, with a burst there and a couple big first-down plays.

    The guy played really fantastic for an opening ballgame, very much in control, ... I think he had one poor check, and that was it. For a game that was moving as fast as that one was, I think that was a great opening game for him. I think you'll see him get better each and every week.

    I think Marcus showed he's going to be dangerous. That was a fast defense chasing him, and a couple of times he outran some fast guys.

    He realized he was wrong in some of his actions at West Virginia, ... He's just a competitive guy and got caught up. He was wrong and has apologized.

    I reminded our players about it in the dressing room after the game. We've been a very good football team so far, but it's only four games into the season. The last time we went to West Virginia we were six games into the season and feeling pretty good about ourselves and we got whacked upside the head.

    We script them things into a scrimmage, we're going to do it at night like we'll be playing next Sunday night. Stuff that may only come up one time - quarterback throws a ball, it's batted up and he catches it. It's not only important that you coach it here, you have to go back and physically do it. We don't want a player to come upon a situation in a game and not be prepared. An extra point, they go into a spread, how you line up for that You remember that NFL lineman, his team blocked a punt, he went down and touched it and the other team got it back at the 1 I would hope that would never happen to us because we go over it.

    The win was good. I didn't think we were as efficient offensively, especially in that second quarter, as we needed to be. Some dropped balls, some lack of execution. I thought we came back in the third quarter and got some things done.

    I think sometimes you're a better program than people realize you are. And I think that might be Louisville's case. I mean in the last three years they have won 29 games. They're for real. I think this team can play with anyone.

    I think the challenge for us this week is are we a better football team than we were last week As many good things as we did in the N.C. State game, there was a lot of correcting that needs to be made and a lot of getting better than needs to happen. I believe ... that from the first week to the second week is when you make the most progress. And we have to take advantage of that situation here.

    Coach Frank Beamer was pleased with Vick's precision on deep passes, but he isn't discouraging Vick from running the ball. While Vick said he's only looking to run when he's in trouble, Beamer knows his quarterback's legs are too dangerous not to incorporate in the playbook. I thought one time (Saturday) he could have pulled it down and probably ran it for 10 yards, and he kept waiting for a guy to come open, ... He's such a threat with whatever he does, whichever way he goes he's going to be OK. But I think he needs to take off and run for 10 or 15 (yards) every once in a while, and I'm not sure it wouldn't turn into about 25 or 30.

    We're keeping an eye on Jimmy, but I think it's time for Brandon Frye to step up.

    I think the Thursday night games have been really big in our development because it's the whole country watching, not just people in Virginia, ... I think they're big. If you can play well, they're a tremendous recruiting advantage. If you're playing on Saturday, you're competing against five games in your time slot. If you're playing on Thursday night, there's not much else on TV.

    I'm really glad to get out of here with a win, ... I thought it was a hard-fought game. I said coming in that I thought N.C. State was really going to be one of the best teams in our league and I really believe that after playing them.

    Obviously, something gets their attention in that climate.


    I think my coaches perform at a very, very high level, so this is getting closer to certainly where I think they should be in pay, ... I think his assistants were pretty pleased.

    They just whacked us and socked us and got after us. Hopefully, we're going to be better prepared to go against a great defense this time around.

    We have to compete on the field. That's just the facts. That doesn't interfere with all the time we've spent together before.

    We had talked about moving Duane a year from now, but as we looked at the offensive line we decided to go ahead now,

    You kind of find out a lot about people when your backs are against the wall and people aren't saying nice things about you, people trash you a bit on TV, ... To come back and perform like we did against a great football team is a great win for the program. Exactly how big depends on what we do next week and the week after that.

    Our offense was very much aware that we hadn't scored a touchdown in two years against these guys. I thought they came in and responded to a good football team.

    He's a tough kid. I'm disappointed for Jimmy, but if he can't go, it's time for Brandon Frye to step it up.

    I say come back and check with me in two years and let's see where these guys are.

    We're getting ready to play Ohio. I don't think you talk about those. The players, that shouldn't even be an issue. I'm proud. I'm proud as heck of what people think of us and what's coming around, but I know this In this business it's one week to the next, and if we go out there and stink it up against Ohio, (the media) will be writing about something else next week.

    Defense is ahead of the offense from a maturity standpoint. You really see that out there. There's just a lot going on for some of these guys. It's moving too fast for some of our offensive guys.

    We take pride in our program in doing things right . . . just too many things that weren't quite right, ... I hate to see anyone's story here not be successful. You want it to turn out right, you work for it to come out right. Just too many situations. I thought this was what's best for our football team.
