It was an outdoor affair, like a picnic. But word got around and about 110 people showed up for that meeting. They came from Washington, D.C., Ohio and West Virginia to Latrobe and they became the nucleus.

We had members in Alaska, Hawaii we even had a wing in Canada, but they kind of died out. There were some in Europe, too, at one time.
A lot of barns in those days had arrows painted on their roofs and other messages to let the pilots known they were still on course. And those guys used to joke that the early airplanes were made of sticks and wires.
