    (Grilli) did an outstanding job. I couldn't be happier. I'm sure he's very happy. He did a great job tonight. He had a good curveball tonight. Normally when he's pitching well, it's working for him. He threw it for strikes.

    That was -- pick an adjective -- brilliant, outstanding. He was on the plate and he stayed ahead of the hitters. He's had seven outings for us, and six of them have been good ones, but this one might have been his best.

    When you go through these tough times, you're supposed to be able to battle through it, ... I question some of the battling.


    This team is playing well and deserves some credit. This is a good time to be playing good baseball.

    I don't want to get ahead of ourselves, ... but if he continues like this, we'd have to rethink some things.

    I think Joe will develop into a little more power than he has now. He's got that opposite field stroke, which is nice to have to start with. He's just too big not to hit some home runs at some point. He's a big man.

    You want to get that runner, ... Yes, they might still have runners on first and second with one out, but you will take your chances with that instead of letting the go-ahead run score that late.

    He's been a different player since he has been back. We want to evaluate him, so he'll get the bulk of the playing time down the stretch.

    I just think with the options we have that it's my best option, ... even though he has not pitched well. He has pitched some good games and he's capable in my mind, but it hasn't been real pretty here lately.

    A lot of things aren't going our way. You score that many runs in the first inning and then give up six, it's depleting and it takes its toll on you.

    But it was a heck of a performance by our bullpen. Obviously it will be forgotten, but they deserve a lot of credit all the same. They had us wondering if something unbelievable (a 1-0 victory after a first-inning exit by a starting pitcher) might happen, but you know what, it didn't.

    I told him I'd need to take some time to make some decisions, and he was fine with that. I'd like to stay on the field if I can. I've heard from a lot of people in baseball wishing me the best, but I don't have any offers yet.

    It's really just precautionary. He was examined by a doctor today and rest was prescribed.

    It's been too long. But you know what We broke it. Tomorrow, we have a chance to win the series. Haven't had a chance to say that in quite a while.

    We haven't had too many of these games lately. Carlos comes out right from the get-go with a home run, and it seemed to kind of snowball from there.

    What was there to like about this game It was 10-4 and probably could have been worse,

    We've given him an opportunity, ... but he's taken advantage of it. And it'll only make him better in the long run.
