The people fought, quarreled,
argued, in the desert, the heat,
the wilderness, free but unhappy
thirsty for water
fighting over God,
weak and in need
A staff cleaved the rock
water for the people,
the immediate need,
when they thirsted
for other water,
another kind of faith
the Law giver to be,
parted the sea,
and brought water from the rock
