Even the betrayer, the one who shared the bowl
who would give him over to man
even him, Christ washed their feet
humbling himself before the meal,
before the breaking of the bread,
the pouring of the wine
the conversion of the Passover
into the first communion
the covenant of his blood
He too was washed, but not made clean
taking the morsel, and the pieces of silver
fulfilling his role, betrayer
Turning him over to death
