I
I SAW thee once. Before my fancy’s ken
Swept generations long of noble forms
Whose gaze flashed sympathy with sorrowing men,
Whose mien shed calm on heart’s o’er-breaking storms.
II
I saw thee, and I loved – for in thine eye
Was mirrored soul that touched the infinite;
And my whole being issued in a sigh
That I might touch that soul – be lost in it.
