WHEN of some lovely landscape unforgot
A shadowy sketch I see, my thought divines
Clear sunshine gleaming through the pencilled lines
And cool green shade, where seems a shapeless blot:
I know how morning pierced that sheltered grot,
How noonday glowed between the tufted pines:
And even so, your cold grey portrait shines
With tints unseen by those who know you not.
They cannot see the apple-blossom cheek,
The eyes of midnight blue, the sun-lit hair;
Grave are the lips, and will not smile or speak:
And yet to me the pictured face is fair:
I conned that May-tide bloom when last we met,
And all the eye saw then, the heart sees yet.
