I brought one of my canoe paddles
to the poetry presentation at school
passing it around in the classroom
watching the expressions on their face
Larger than many of them had handled
smiles as it went hand to hand
trying to explain its use
how important to the stories I shared
The weight of the paddle part of the moment
understanding the effort I used
pushing off from shore
turning into the wind
Pulling on the paddle
trying to guide my own course
learning, slowly, to go with the wind
returning in the lee of the shore
