I rim with mind the edges of two hemispheres,
Weighted each against the other.
In the tautened center: I–
The will to weigh: my will.
Two lives are heart-high by me.
I can shut out one: I add my heart
The other way …
But pity bears me back,
As singing one love goes away.
O pity! that you might
Be more than just a dram–
Be longing for that other one,
That all this sadness might go from
His eyes …
I follow singing,
Being but a scale.
