If I could only explain
what the suddenness
of the news means to me
To learn, of the certainty
the finality of your death
passing from life, falling
into the pit, to the earth
inexorably, instantly,
cut by the scythe, the reaper
seeing you in court
earlier, minutes really
before you were gathered in
Hearing, at a client’s table,
in my own moving
from task to task,
frenetically, you were gone
suddenly. That was a slap,
a centering moment
clarion call and epiphany
words reverberating in my ears
Shock and stunned revelation
frozen in the suddenness
