I must go on: There may be ways unseen
For you to elude exigencies of fate;
You may know subtle means to eradicate
This driving force, or wedge control between.
For me no circumstance can intervene
Mercifully to close the yawning gate.
I must press on, for now the hour is late,
The journey long, and distant my demesne.
Your small tin gods who made you well content
To wear an aureole, have left me prouder
In purple dyes once Lucifer looked upon.
I drink the world, you take the sacrament;
You pray your prayer, but I shall thunder louder
Than your Te Deum at the Rubicon.
