Riveted to mountain slopes,
The Douglas fir and pine
Were as firm as ribs of steel
Where drills pneumatic whine;
Ogres of our country’s wealth
Have wasted root and branch–
(Nothing holds the titled soil
To stave the avalanche).
They have carved an epitaph
Transmuting what they own
From the trees they massacred
To towered towns of stone,
But malignance of their greed
Will be a boomerang
Swinging back in seismic throes
To sing the song they sang.
