RAIN, rain against the windows,- and the wind
Whistles its dreary eerie lullaby
Between the drowned earth and the sodden sky
That is with cloudy curtains muffled blind ;
The sad trees shiver in their sodden rind,
From their despairing boughs the drenched leaves fly
Too wet for any summer suns to dry :
Was ever English summer so unkind ?
And yet this black July, this baleful June,
Are fair, for summer came across the seas ;
We can defy the changes of the moon,
We can compel the melancholy breeze
That wails its requiem through the dripping trees
To change its music to a marriage tune !
