A certain tyrant to disgrace
The more a rebel’s resting-place,
Compelled the people every one
To hurl, in passing there, a stone;
Which done, the rugged pile became
A sepulchre to keep the name.
And thus it is with Edgar Poe;
Each passing critic has his throw,
Nor sees, defeating his intent,
How lofty grows the monument.
