Never mind my haunted eyes
Nor try to plumb a mystery;
You would not evince surprise
Had you studied history.
You would understand, had you
Conned between the lines; instead
History was a war or two
And ninety hundred million dad.
Hungry-haunted eyes convey
Nothing in your category;
Any explanation may
Be for you sufficient story.
So from eyes that laugh and weep
I unloose a load of freight;
But in secret still I keep
History inviolate.
