Who will buy my peaches — Tinted by the sprites
With faery gold and moonshine, in the dewy nights;
Honied in the kisses cajoled from the bees,
Ripened to the choruses of orchard melodies.
Will you buy my peaches? all the summer sun
With spells of dreamy languor witched them every one;
All the days so golden, gentle rain and dew,
Magiced in their tawniness to set a feast for you.
Who will buy my peaches? crushed against your lip
And sipping as the bee sucks, lest the nectar slip,
Memory will conjure out from sunny years
Joys that held no bitterness, and hope that bred no fears.
Will you buy my peaches? taste and you will know
The days you played at Injun in the long ago;
Eves that sped a-trysting ‘neath the orchard bloom,
Lips that clung in ecstasy, amidst the scented gloom.
You’ll not buy my peaches? all they are to you
Is fruit upon the sidewalk from trees you never knew?
Then buy them a veteran whose heritage you stol;
Who fought your Armageddon, but cannot face your dole!
Twenty cents of profit on each crate I sell
Is not too high a guerdon for forty months in Hell!
You will not buy my witchery of sun and rain and earth?
Then buy your country’s concept of a defender’s worth
