In the telling in Luke
the list of the powerful
the important
and of John
long going into the wilderness
claiming this place, holy ground
to proclaim the coming
the king on the earth
to prepare the way
for the Christ
to make his way straight
Hollow praise for the king
from the powerful,
those with much to lose
called to account by John
at the water’s edge
named vipers to their face
So it is in our time too
the rich men unable
to offer all to the Lord
holding onto their power
