A silly dreaming urchin, I secretly possessed
Two special companions. The one was sad and pale,
With a lamb across his shoulder. The friend I loved the best
Was gay and very golden, with a brave red tail.
Growing old and older, I was told to my chagrin
That the futile sad shadow was a god’s own son;
That my brave companion was a man of sin,
And all the good he did was a thing undone.
Growing old and older … But I’m not! but I’m not!
I try to learn their lesson, and I regularly fail.
I studied sad shadows; the shadows forgot,
And all I remembered was a brave red tail.
