From Mericourt to Avion
‘Tis but a mile or so:
(Only the span ‘tixt life and death,
I found, so long ago!)
To saunter there and back again
Would while an hour away:
(For me, there was no going back;
To come, I fought a day!)
A pleasant road to Avion
To tread while vespers chime:
(It led through reek and blast of hell
When I passed, in my time!)
To rest an hour at Avion
Is peaceful, by the lake:
(The rest I found at Avion
No mortal trump may break!)
