DAY goes slowly to its end,
Full of toil and care;
Evening is a tender friend,
With eyes of stars so fair.
Day the thoughts doth scatter wide
Far and wide they roam;
Evening calls the heart again
To its lov’d at home.
Through earth’s valleys far and near
Day casts the eager eye;
Evening turns the prayerful gaze
To mansions in the sky.
Day is eager and athirst
Some new gain to win;
Evening hours of peace and rest
Enjoy what’s gathered in.
Day amid its varying scenes
Sees us laugh and weep;
But the sigh of evening oft
Stirs a deeper deep.
Daylong wandering far and wide
The heart can find no rest;
But at even, with sweet song,
Flies it to its nest.
