Ah, Rebecca, mother,
How did you have heart to
Give more love to one
Fair-faced, slim brother
Than you did to the other,
More rough and uncouth
In his heritage of youth?
Though you basely stooped to trick
One son for another;
Though you tricked a son of wilds
For a son of furrowed sod;
Though you tricked one boy
For his acquiescing brother,
How, Rebecca, did you so
Blind the awful eyes of God?
If I ever had to choose
A father for a struggling race,
I would choose one less
Smooth of heart and fair of face.
I would choose, God, a man
More wild, more uncouth,
With a rough heart of rock
And muscled youth.
