“Caliban, Trinculo,
My insolent mates,
Don’t you know me?”
It is Stephano.
Pour me another mug of mead
To block out the storm
In my mind
I beseech thee!
For there is no balance
With She and Me
Aggressive swings
Of the pendulum instead
Ecstasy and oblivion
Rapture and chaos.
Desires met
And needs unfulfilled
Again and still.
Emotions frayed
For the adolescent growing quickly
And the man growing tired
Of waiting, of giving control
And power over my life
To other players
On the stage.
Prospero what magic
Can you conjure –
To open my eyes
To release my captured soul
And find balance
Outside the Tempest.
Based on my Great Great Great Great Great Great Great Great Great Grandfather, Stephen Hopkins, who is claimed to be the basis for Stephano in Shakespeare’s The Tempest.
