Cod cakes, handmade
with her hands
butter, egg, potato
and cod, in wooden boxes
salted and saved
for our dinner
a memory of those meals
long ago in my past
echoed through today
as another cook, another mother
prepared comfort food
in her kitchen
different food, but the same smell
of the hot grease,
the cooked breadcrumbs
hanging heavy in the summer air
leftover scent memories
rekindled so easily
with cooking
