A desk became a portal
a keyhole to the past
hiding a secret
uncovering another
a family fact
unknown to us in the present
a gift of a desk
from the wood
of Dewey’s flagship
from a man we don’t know
to a great grandfather
we didn’t know
hidden behind the drawer stop
discovered in refinishing
by a sixteen year old
It lead to questions
and answers unexpected
a revelation of a different life
a different birth
not known
unexplored
undiscussed
within the family
a keyhole to another family
a different heritage
more truthful
fascinating
