San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom quickly decided that the shocking scenes of Katrina provided a teachable moment. Newsom unveiled a long-planned public-service advertising campaign last week that will amplify what may be Katrina's most important take-home message survivors of a major emergency will probably need to fend for themselves for the first few days after calamity strikes. The goal is to get as many San Franciscans as possible to assemble--and keep current--a basic emergency kit, including a flashlight, a transistor radio, spare batteries, canned goods and, above all, enough water to last at least three days. If Hurricane Katrina didn't prove it to you, I don't know what will, ... When disaster strikes, we're all going to be on our own for a minimum of 72 hours.
Historically, San Franciscans have not valued street trees as much as other communities have.
The Sentinel is clearly a political committee and San Franciscans deserve to know who funds them as required by State law,

As Mayor of San Francisco, I will work hard to ensure that, in the event of natural or man-made disasters, San Franciscans are prepared and our City is protected.
San Franciscans know we live in the most beautiful city in the world, a jewel on the edge of the Golden Gate.
All the rehearsals and all the preparations and all the trial runs have now paid dividends, ... San Franciscans have been performing magnificently ... road rage has been totally removed, people have been incredibly courteous to each other.
But living in uncertain times does not mean San Franciscans must live in fear.
