Mike Hargrove Quotes (116 Quotes)

If Willie goes out there every day, you lose a lot of your flexibility. I wouldn't mind using him out of a platoon situation, but I'd hate to send him out there every day.

We have options. It wouldn't do any good to discuss them before I talk to Bill. That would be putting the cart before the horse.

I saw a stat that said Guerrero has 14 homers against Seattle in 34 games the past two years. That's a ton of homers against one club.

It was good to see. He might have muddied the picture a little bit.

He's a good player. He's a good hitter, a good defender and a good baserunner. He also plays hard all the time. He certainly is a tremendous role model for all our young players, or anyone else who wants to watch.

He's come a long way since he first came to us in the trade from the Chicago White Sox. His stroke and plate coverage are much better.

We haven't talked to Mel and we haven't talked about Mel. He's still under contract with the Yankees.

Mariners 2, Athletics 0 Felix Hernandez allowed four hits and a walk in seven shutout innings for visiting Seattle, which left the A's 1 12 games behind in the wild-card race. Hernandez, 19, outdueled Joe Blanton and didn't complain when he was pulled. Felix, if he had a mouth full of nickels, he wouldn't give you change for a quarter, ... He doesn't speak much.

Matt has been a good big-league player. We'll make the switch to get him some at-bats ... give Jeremy time to regroup. If Matt swings and plays the way Matt can, it will make things interesting.

He's just a good player. He's a good hitter, a good defender and a good baserunner. He's a tremendous role model for all our younger players.

You guys asked me before if he was awestruck with the Yankees, and I tried to downplay that. I don't know he was awestruck, but he was terribly excited. He was flying open. Bad. He couldn't find command of his pitches.

There was no discussion of limiting his innings. And you saw what happened to him.

I think every day he walks out and you look at his face you realize you expect too much out of him because he's only 19 years old. He's going to be cursed and blessed his entire career. There are going to be big expectations for him. He's blessed in the fact that he probably can meet those expectations more times than not. It's kind of a double-edged sword.

Sure, he's pressing. But his last two at-bats Friday, he showed a good solid approach and that's encouraging.

We think he slept on it wrong, and sometimes that can take hours to recover from. At least that's what our medical people told me. Anyway, he's fine.

On a scale of 1-10, this is barely a 1. This is patty cake.

When I say Dan Wilson is one of the good guys, for me, that's the ultimate compliment. Very few of us, in all walks of life, rarely say and do the same thing. There's nothing phony about Dan Wilson. He talks the talk and walks the walk. Anytime someone like that leaves, we're all worse off for it.

He is as was advertised. He's a good solid catcher, he has a good quick release. He has an average to a little above average arm that's accurate, and he's a very intelligent player. I'm glad he's on our side.

It was certainly the most nerve-wracking way to go. But we'll benefit in the long run by having him ready for the rest of the month.

He had a 14-pitch first inning and a 38-pitch second inning. It's like somebody turned the light switch off.

He kept a good-hitting ballclub off-balance and we were able to scratch out a few runs.

You watch the way he carries himself. It's not arrogantly, it's confidently. You'd think he's old beyond his years, then you look at his eyes and think, 'This guy's a pup.' He's still a tender guy. Our job is to keep his feet on the ground.

I'm not going to talk about the umpire. Let's talk about something we can control, ... The first two innings were very non-typical of his outings this year.

There's nothing worse than loading the bases and scoring one run. Jose is still not a polished player, but he has a chance to become one.

We gave ourselves a chance to come back. We had patience when it counted.

Did he have no-hit stuff Yeah, I think so. I was sitting there in the sixth wondering how many pitches to let him go for a no-hitter. He's young and big and strong, and he had only 83 going into the seventh. ... I'd have let him go 130 pitches. I'd like to have had that decision to make.

Somebody's got to separate themselves from the pack, and none of them has done it so far. But we've still got time.

He threw a lot of strikes and got a lot of ground balls. I really expected him to throw a complete game. But the Angels have an awfully good ballclub and you have to keep them down when they are down.

He was only supposed to go two innings, but the way he threw, we stretched him out to three. He had real good command of his fastball and a real good breaking ball.

It wasn't a bad outing. it wasn't a great outing. It was just a Spring Training outing. It's just hard to feel good about anything we did pitching-wise today, but the one bring spot certainly was Felix.

Hopefully, we'll use him three or four times. There is nothing wrong with his arm. It was just dead the other day.

I always have been intrigued by Ichiro hitting third. When I managed against him with Baltimore I was intrigued by the idea. It is not out of the realm of possibility that it would happen here. ... That would never be done without first discussing it with Ichiro.

I honestly believe what we're seeing is Joel gaining confidence and arm strength,

He swings the bat and we can use every good bat we can get. I'm very excited about him joining the ball club.

The starters have, for the most part, given us a chance to win every night. As a whole, they've done their jobs.

I think all aspects of our ball club played well, we just had that one lapse in the sixth inning with the bases loaded.

Jeff had a seven-pitch first and 35-pitch second, and we were hoping he'd adjust somewhere in the middle. But he couldn't. His location was off and his command, and command is the key element to success on a consistent basis.

Back in the early 90s and mid 90s, the philosophy was to club people to death. The philosophy was to beat them with our bats and shut them down with our bullpen. I think it's a little different now because of the starting pitching.

We played well all night, and that made for a fun evening.

A good game for us, although I was worried about Eddie Guardado in the ninth, he was out of sync so much. Not only did we get key hits late, but we had real good pitching and got key outs when we needed.

A pretty impressive debut, rough luck there in the first inning, but he threw the ball well. He got better as he went along. We'll increase his pitch count the next outing.

I know the wind was blowing out, but that ball was spanked, so it probably would have been a homer regardless. And that's good to see.

I figured it was as good as any. I figured if we couldn't protect a 10-run lead ... We got him out there, and I'm not sure he took a breath the whole time he was out there.

We won't know until tomorrow. If I were to guess, he pulled a hamstring.

On the whole it was a good outing. There were a lot of times when Gil over-threw and cost himself a higher pitch count early. But he seemed to settle down in the third, fourth and fifth, got the ball down and made pitches when he needed to.

He didn't have command of anything. He got away with some hanging breaking balls early, but he didn't get away with the one he threw to Barajas. It wasn't a good night for Felix.
