Nevertheless
Seest thou a man diligent in business?
Nevertheless
Seest thou a man diligent in business?
How shall the soul of a man be larger than the life he has lived?
Do you think that odes and sermons,
And the ringing of church bells,
And the blood of old men and young men,
Martyred for the truth they saw
With eyes made bright by faith in God,
Accomplished the world's great reformations?
Paul was invalided from over study,
Mary became a recluse at home for love of a man --
I sat under my cedar tree.
I thought over the last letter written me
By that estranged young soul
Whose betrayal of me I had concealed
By marrying the old man.
Thus you believe, viewing the lives of other men,
As one who in God-like fashion bends over an anthill,
Seeing how their difficulties could be avoided.
They have chiseled on my stone the words:
'His life was gentle, and the elements so mixed in him
That nature might stand up and say to all the world,
This was a man.
And I say to all, beware of ideals,
Beware of giving your love away
To any man alive.
Horses and men are just alike.
But here is a joke of cosmic size:
The urge of nature that made a man
Evolve from his brain a spiritual life --
Oh miracle of the world!
Beware of the man who rises to power from one suspender.
If a man could bite the giant hand
That catchs and destroys him,
As I was bitten by a rat
While demonstrating my patent trap,
In my hardware store that day.
The secret of man, -- the sower.
But a man can never avenge himself
On the monstrous ogre Life.
Then that woman, whom the men
Styled Cleopatra, came along.
