Bronco Mendenhall Quotes (60 Quotes)

When pressure was called, the defensive players were to completely abandon the run at any expense for getting pressure, ... I think we made enough plays at the right time to alter the game with that approach.

I thought our offense moved the ball consistently from beginning to end. They overcame adversity in critical situations and the leadership of our quarterback and the resolve of the offense was exceptional.

Webb had over 250 yards against us with three passes over the top, so we made a concerted effort last year to make sure we had him contained. I believe he had three or four catches for not nearly the yardage, but that was after the fact of being exposed to what kind of an athlete he is. He shows that week in and week out.

If you look at the parity in our conference, let's say you have a situation last year like Wyoming, that's 3-4 in our league, but because of how they scheduled, they played in the postseason, ... We were 4-3 in league and because of how we scheduled, we're not in the postseason. Ultimately, you have to beat who you play and execute at that level. But to not address scheduling in that discussion isn't a wise thing to do. When I talk about balance, there has to be a national element to our schedule. It's what is expected at BYU and it's what the standard has been here. Last year, we played three undefeated teams (Boise State, Utah, USC). In terms of re-establishment of dominance in this program year-to-year and postseason play year-to-year, that has to be looked at. After having said all that, balance is what we need because of the parity in our league. It could be realistic that it's 5-3 to win the league. Or 6-2. What about all the teams that are 4-4 That's going to come down to postseason play and what their non-conference scheduling is. Ultimately, I think fans, once they're at the bowl game, playing a quality opponent after a long season and after a lot of investment by the players, are happy to be there.

The leadership of our quarterback and the resolve of the offense was exceptional. John was poised throughout the game and he gained confidence. I was proud to be his coach today.

If we play the run effectively we have an excellent chance to win the game, ... There's a demoralizing effect when you can't stop the run. When you know your opponent is going to run and you make your best call to stop it and they still get four or five yards, it has an effect on the defense in terms of physical play and losing those one-on-one battles.

They made adjustments and we didn't make enough plays. I'm proud of our team. We need to do a better job making plays that make a difference in a close game.

Is there one vision, is there one focus, is there one execution standard Absolutely,

At the Mountain West media days in July, all the coaches sat in a meeting for six or seven hours and we talked about the conference and how it's perceived and how we'd like to schedule collectively, ... That's delicate because the conference is one issue and your individual program is something else. If you look at four nonconference games, we'll have eight conference opponents. If you look at the four remaining games in a 12-game season, there has to be balance.

I think we're progressing well. We're seeing the balls caught in front of the secondary and they have leverage. Now we need to work on finishing and tackling at a higher level.

With most teams I've had to guard against complacency with two weeks between games,

Each specific week and that week's full attention is what needs to be focused on now. As I've thought a lot about it, that has been my message to them. All those other things, that's for me to see.

I'm extremely excited about this class. The first word that comes to my mind is character.

If I give you my personal interpretation of it, it's both art and science.

We never really took that away from them. Either way, they were attacking us through the air and that is where we were the most vulnerable and that is where they were the most successful today.

If a player knows he has a chance to play, the way he invests in practice is much different. He's invested at a higher level and I think that's great for team practice. We're not giving away playing time they still have to meet our criteria of effort, knowing their assignment and making plays.

I think we're three deep at linebacker. You might see nine different guys out there. I like the idea of fresh infantry. If you're high pressure like we are it can allow you to enforce your will on the other team. We have experience and we have athleticism, and we have a blend of both.

What's interesting is they're running the quarterback, running him effectively and running him often. Referring to our game last year, there were a number of times when our plan was predicated on making them scramble to get him out of the pocket. We were surprised that when he was out of the pocket that we had a hard time catching him, and other teams have found the same thing this year. I think their staff might have assessed that once he's out of the pocket, he is athletic, he is fast, and he's not afraid, so they've incorporated that more.

I think they (BYU players) want to win and they're willing. I also think we have a lot of work to do. It's amazing when you work against yourself, which is what we did today, the effort it takes to overcome that is different than when you're playing well.

It's a great feeling, but, again, much like last week when I was asked why I appear so calm as there appeared to be raging stories about BYU football and its state of affairs, I see the end in mind and this is just another step in the direction I'd like this football program to go to grow our team, to develop our team, to handle adversity, to have some success, ... This is just the next step. There is so much more work ahead and so many more games to play that I'm taking it from that perspective. Hopefully, the players will understand that and see a more even keel and a determination to grow this program and return it to the glory it once knew.

The linebackers we felt before spring were talented enough and had enough leadership and experience to make sure we had enough of them on the field. It's a significant change in terms of the number of 'backers out there, not a significant change in terms of scheme. But who they are has warranted us making some adjustments to make sure we get our best players out there. There's tremendous competition, depth and talent at that position. That's why we're featuring those players in our defense this year.

Cal played an excellent game today and they deserved to win. The end result is we played good enough to lose by seven. The disappointing aspect is it was a loss. The positive aspect is that we exhibited resiliency. We know we could have won that game. We fell short for a number of reasons, but I believe this was a solid beginning to what's to come for this program. And I look forward to getting right back to it after Christmas.
