Tchaikovsky was going through tough times then, because he went through a divorce. This symphony is very intense and passionate but with a very optimistic and exciting ending.
We do a lot of light classical programming with that, too... obviously... a lot of Tchaikovsky music, Grieg, things like that which have become less classical with classical concerts.
So who's perfect ... Washington had false teeth. Franklin was nearsighted. Mussolini had syphilis. Unpleasant things have been said about Walt Whitman and Oscar Wilde. Tchaikovsky had his problems, too. And Lincoln was constipated.
To have this full story unfold onstage at the Keith-Albee by the Tchaikovsky Ballet Company is going to be a great spectacle for those who are dance lovers, from kids to adults. The really amazing part is that this group traveling with a 50-piece orchestra, and seeing the show with this great music will really be a treat.
The only winner in the War of 1812 was Tchaikovsky.
