In high school, my goal was to be a writer for SNL, then I got into the acting.
In this case, it seemed the video's circulation online was driving more people to watch SNL on television, (and likely encouraging them to watch it live so they could have the first crack at talking about new episodes with friends) -- attracting viewers especially among the young, connected demographic advertisers want to reach.
In the year and a half I was on SNL, I never saw anybody ad lib anything. For a very good reason - the director cut according to the script. So, if you ad libbed, you'd be off mike and off camera.
He was one of the few people from SNL who realized that ensemble was the way for him to go. He never tried to break into major movie roles ... he really understood that this was his strength. He was a strong ensemble player, and really an original.
I had always wanted to be on SNL, it's not always great, but it's this leftover childhood dream.

I'm happier than I've ever been. SNL is one of the only places you can both act and create characters for a living.
