Now were the Desolation fain to stamp
The congealed Spirit of man into the pit,
Save that, unquenchable because unlit,
The Love of God burns steady, like a Lamp.
Now were the Desolation fain to stamp
The congealed Spirit of man into the pit,
Save that, unquenchable because unlit,
The Love of God burns steady, like a Lamp.
Fain would I climb, yet fear I to fall.
I, I, I myself
sometimes, leaving the fear of God on the left hand, and hiding
mine honour in my necessity, am fain to shuffle, to hedge,
and to lurch; and yet you, rogue, will ensconce your rags,
your cat-a-mountain looks, your red-lattice phrases, and
your bold-beating oaths, under the shelter of your honour!
My way of life
Is fall'n into the sear, the yellow leaf,
And that which should accompany old age,
As honor, love, obedience, troops of friends,
I must not look to have; but in their stead,
Curses, not loud but deep, mouth-honor, breath,
Which the poor heart would fain deny and dare not.
Batter my heart, three-personed God, for you As yet but knock, breathe, shine, and seek to mend That I may rise and stand, o'erthrow me and bend Your force to break, blow, burn, and make me new. I, like a usurped town to another due, Labor to admit you, but oh, to no end Reason, your viceroy in me, me should defend, But is captived, and proves weak or untrue. Yet dearly I love you, and would be lov-ed fain, But am betrothed unto your enemy Divorce me, untie or break that knot again Take me to you, imprison me, for I Except you enthrall me, never shall be free, Nor ever chaste, except you ravish me.
We are always doing something for posterity, but I would fain see posterity do something for us.
The nymphs, cold creatures of man's colder brain,
Chilled Nature's streams till man's warm heart was fain
Never to lave its love in them again.
They fade in you; their lips are fain
To meet the old caress:
And all their love is mine again
As lip to lip we press.
In its entirety, probably, it follows us at every instant; all that we have felt, thought and willed from our earliest infancy is there, leaning over the present which is about to join it, pressing against the portals of consciousness that would fain leave it outside.
In my afternoon walk I would fain forget all my morning occupations and my obligations to society.
Fain the youth would, in his first alarm,
Keeper, I prithee sit by me awhile;
My soul is heavy, and I fain would sleep.
When for love it was fain of
The wild heart was chidden,
When the white limbs were clothed
And the beauty was hidden;
But the churchmen fain would kill their church, As the churches have kill'd their Christ.
I would fain grow old learning many things.
Yea, man and birds are fain of climbing high.
