Eager, poised and ready
unfurling in the hot July sun
wanting, needing to join
her sisters and brothers
in the church’s flowerbed
fighting to break free
of the bud, the green prison
that held her until today
knowing this was her moment
to feel the rays against her skin
to turn to face the warmth
drink in the fragrance
of the garden
live for the few days
of her short life
sharing herself
for you and me
if we but notice
her struggle
yearning to bloom
