Of a smale cause grewe noe smale stryfe
Twene John and Jone then manne and wyfe.
John called Jone nyse because that she
In talke betwene them woulde not agre:
That butter and milke she loued well
And yet of Cheese did hate the smelle:
Whiche John sayde was follye as greate
As for the shelle to hate the meate.
John sayde she mighte euen by lyke rate
Loue all the partes and the hole hate.
Jone towched in witt beinge thoughte wyse
For natures faulte beinge called nyse
Thoughte if she mumme shoulde thus indure
John to the like it woulde procure:
Wherefore she sayde, by gis my John,
The reason you make is a fonde won:
For soe mighte I iustelye auowe
Of Oxe and Sheepe knoweinge that you
Loue more the fatte then all the reste
Prouide you candell for your feaste.
Otherwise in parte.
For thoughe that ye the fatte doe loue
Of Oxe and Sheepe the reste aboue,
Yet my John excepte you wandell
I knowe well you loue noe candell.
