Down by the dirt
at the base of the white pine
clutched close,
holding the gnarled,
wrinkled elephant skin
a cicada chrysalis
an empty shell
still clinging to the tree
after the birthing
clear, amber, ripped open
by the living adult
high up in the canopy now
to live out its short life
up in the sun
