We heard a new shepherd
in the quiet of the congregation
listening, hanging on each new word
our attention held by the modulation of his voice
drawing us in by a hushed tone, repetition of phrase,
his open arms, evoking the love of Christ
Touching each of us, old timers and new converts
wanting to know more about him
the stories he will weave of himself
into the living word
the language of a loving God
made real in the telling of the good news
in the sanctuary
reaching human hearts
cracking the hardness of the age
finding us receptive
to different food
in new pastures
under the watchful eye
of the new shepherd
