Maybe the metaphor shouldn’t be
pebbles thrown into the pond;
maybe the more apt analogy
the hope, and the trepidation
is the idea of a hammer blow to the ice
thin and melting, or just growing perhaps
the hollow thunk and shock waves below
the faint then growing thunder
of the cracks building, splitting,
shards of jagged edges,
calving without apparent order
crushing, falling into the ice stew
to ponder and explore
