Night; and so we share a bed …
You have never guessed
One who is completely dead
Holds you to his breast.
Hide the stars, shield the moon,
That you may not see,
Folded limb to limb, how soon
Comes satiety.
Honeyed words of long ago
Echo from my lips.
You believe them, even though
Acid with them drips.
Acid drips into my heart,
Honey to your ear;
You receive the only part
That you wish to hear.
In your sweet naivety,
So you are satisfied,
Shall I tell you, brutally,
When or how I died?
Dead love is a kindly one,
Gentle, though impress
Of its touch be never done
Save in pity’s dress.
Sleep, child, and daily wake
From dreaming comforted,
Unaware that hearts break
In the living dead.
