The wisdom of nature
the choice of natural selection
so much at a young age
to comprehend,
hard to fully explain
Too small or injured
unlikely to survive
taken in an instant
so the others born with her
that they would thrive
When Hope died, sadness
crushing for this moment
pain in her choice –
to kill her small daughter
in caring for the others

talking to Shyanne’s friend at the bus stop
on the death of a few-days-old kitten, Hope,
smothered by its mother this morning
