Perhaps there will
Be snow in heaven,
And noisy children coasting down the street
That slopes most;
Boys in red sweaters and big overshoes,
Each shouting shrilly
And turning his lithe young body on the sled
To keep his balance,
And giggling little girls
Afraid
And yearning
To be still more afraid,
So venturing
To steer alone
Where the slide is iciest.
And Mary standing
At the top of the hill
Watching the very little ones,
Picking up dropped mittens,
And shuddering
With mother cowardice
As she looks down the slope and sees
The rocks strike sparks from the runners.
And Christ, maybe,
With a running start
Flinging himself
Upon a sled he’s cajoled from some youngster
And yelling
To warn a straggler off the track;
Or maybe steering
For some tiny lad that is afraid
And laughing with the child
When he runs them both into a snowbank.
And God, an old man, standing by the side,
And watching, wistfully, as old men will-
